BEYOND HOMEBASE

We have found the concept of the baseball field to be one that beautifully illustrates the journey to self-sufficiency. Home plate (complete self-sufficiency) is the end goal. We all want to get there, but we don't all start at the same place. Some of us are born at 2nd or even 3rd base. We had supportive primary caregivers; we were housed, fed, and went to school. The support necessary for us to make it to home plate is relatively minor.

Others of us were born in the dugout or, even worse, the parking lot. Those of us born in the dugout or the parking lot have a long arduous journey to home plate. We likely didn’t have attentive, supportive parents and were exposed to housing insecurity, hunger, domestic violence, and sexual abuse. Now, imagine that each of the listed traumas acts as 6 heavy bricks that are loaded into a backpack that you have to wear on your trek to the field and to each subsequent base. Not only is your distance longer, your load is metaphorically heavier.

At BeyondHome our hope is to eliminate the trek to the field completely. By starting with housing, we eliminate one massive obstacle. From there, we gently, and slowly help our residents remove one brick at a time from their backpacks through free trauma informed therapy, case management and community. The resources we provide access to (our food bank, financial courses, job readiness training, parenting courses) make movement from one base to another a little bit more achievable.

BEYOND HOMEBASE Champions acknowledge that helping people to the field, and empowering and equipping them at each base, requires consistent resources. This group of people gives monthly financial support to BeyondHome, knowing that 80% of funding goes directly to programming. They recognize that housing is just the beginning of transformation for these families, for our city, and for our state.
